A friend and I somewhat randomly caught a hypnotizing performance by the folk-electronica duo The Quavers at BAM Cafe last night. Comprised of Brooklyn-based Catherine McRae and T. Griffin, the pair combines hushed harmonies, violin, guitar, samplers, loopers, and a "vibraphonette" to create ethereal, comtemplative walls of sound. It's one of those perfect New York moments: listening to the Quavers "porch electronica" in the lovely BAM Cafe, LEDs swirling and dancing in the the giant arched windows, the hushed crowd leaning over their glasses of pinot and Beck's. The Quavers sing songs like "That's Why God Made Cars" and "Ghost Parking" -- the sort of quirky, urban-inflected poetry I wish I still wrote.
I'm reclining on sofa cushion, eyes closed, letting the music wash over me, just happy to be here.
