Ice Cream Sandwich Inspired by Italian Architect Renzo Piano

Renzo Apple Pie-ano Ice Cream Sandwich

I just discovered at my local market an artisinal, architecturally-inspired ice cream sandwich line called... wait for it... Coolhaus

The name "Coolhaus" is, according to their website, a triple-entendre:

  1. Bauhaus, an influential modernist design movement of the 1920′s and 30′s.
  2. Rem Koolhaas, the famous Dutch Architect and Theorist who challenged the mantra "Form follows function"
  3. "Cool house," isn't that what you're eating – an ice cream sandwich deconstructed into a cookie roof and floor slab with ice cream walls?

That's pretty clever. But how good is the dessert?

Renzo Apple Pie-ano Ice Cream SandwichThere were various flavors on offer, but I had to try the "Renzo Apple Pie-ano" style: two oatmeal raisin cookies encasing apple-flavored ice cream.  Renzo Piano, renowned Italian architect, was the designer of -- among many other buildings -- the Cal Academy of Sciences, where I work.  Plus, I love oatmeal raisin cookies.

My Verdict: DELICIOUS. Large, soft cookies and quality ice cream in just the right proportions.  I recommend it.

Next flavor I have to try: the "Louis Ba-kahn" which is two chocolate chip cookies sandwiching brown butter candied bacon ice cream. Woah, Nellie.
